The 112 year old Veringkanal-Schleuse perfectly works again and should become even better than before!

Its navigation was out of order. The last kilometer to the countryside of the hidden Veringkanal-Schleuse at the Schlengendeich 10 had to have recognised, by council of state of Dr. Stephan Winters from the authority city-development and environment (BSU) and, from Professor Dr. -Ing. Franz-Rudolf cock, the technical advisor of the Veringkanal-Genossenschaft.
The last of the altogether eight wooden lock gates had been renewed. Furthermore, stonework was put in good condition.
The BSU paid for it more than 550 000 Euro. The commitment of the authority to the receipt of the 112 years of old technical construction was much appreciated with the inauguration-celebration of the Kanal

Behind the repair of the oldest still hand-operated Stemmtor-Schleuse in the city is more than only satisfactiont in the receipt of the technology . At Elbinsel, site of Wilhelm-Castle offers its inhabitants only little access to the water. Council of state of Stephan Winter writes "The whole terrain becomes better accessible already and the edges of the water better accessable".

It is at the entire, approximately two kilometers long canal, that finishes at the site of Wilhelm-Castle in the north at the honey-factory at industry-street.
Opposite the honey-factory, a place against the canal of Sanitaspark, more footpaths and a new canal-bridge at were contructed leading toHospital Groß Sand. The Federal-research project city-rebuilding-west, (experimental cities - and housing), that was steered at planning from the Hamburg office, is behind these town-planning improvements.

The footpath of the bridge at the canal bank, it is intended, to lead up to the sluice. And even further from there to the so-called Reiherstieg-Knie at the Straßeneck Alte Schleuse/Reiherstieg main-canal, where garden-show (igs) should be a parking place 2013 for visitor-vehicles of the Internationale Gartenschau.
Also a Barkassen-Anleger calls at the junction. Visitors come from there per Shuttle-Bus or just on foot - at the sluice - to the garden-show-terrain. Its main-access will be in the area quantity-street.

Lock-keeper Rigo Maaß looks after approximately 8000 cubic meters terrain in the order of the canal-cooperative. That he with rods the eight lock gates opens and closed, called Triebstock, and must adjust according to ship-size from 25 Euro collects the Tolls, however Tolls are only rarely collected nowadays.
There are no industrial users at the canal any more. The Northern Oelwerke Walther Carroux GmbH was the last company. The Schuten-Transport, commercial transport, is no longer viable. Whoever wants to work the sluice on the waterway must say a day previously!

The Veringkanal is through the sluice that fluctuates, in the tide dependent water-stand of the Elbe. A Sperrwerk offers additional high water-protection at the Reiherstieg.
All residents of the canal are members of the cooperative automatically and must pay approximately eight Euro per meter of property and year. But bulk of the shore belongs to the property-administration of the city.

Wilhelmsburg - Veringstraße, Veringkanal

. In the Wilhelmsburger northwest, the contractor Hermann Vering constructed the Veringkanal about 1890. 250 hectares of the swampy Elbinsel-Geländes, bought from its people, intended for rising industrialization and for the construction of residences, streets and ways. The Veringkanal, its banks lined with many factories is industrial, and present day on the way to become interesting also for leisure time usage.

Hamburg's authority for city-development and environment, the department low-construction and city-green of the Harburger district-velvet, the Hamburg city-development-office planning, the museum for work and finally the history-workshop of the Wilhelmsburger honey-factory. The EC-project B-Sure, that contributes financially also in other countries of Europe, to make urban industry-waters publicly accessible, granted Euro 1,5 millions for the project.

The grassed area is developed at the North-corner of the canal. It was baptized Sanitaspark..A bridge was built, it connects with a footpath-connection over the water, along at the east bank of the canal, past at the facade of the former Merkel-Verwaltungsgebäudes.
But Margret Markert of the history-workshop and its co-workers Esther Lang and Anke Ratjen want to use the chance and wants to do more - a history path way.
Margret Markert says, Here become it erlebbar history. However, approximately Euro 130 000 are still missing for it. Not exactly little!
One looks for Sponsorships. For example, a lookout station, that could be put at the canal-shore on the Sanitaspark at the site of an old industry-crane.
A so-called Löschplatz was there earlier. The history pathway concept intends also wall-pictures and art-projects.

Our history pathway could be interesting construction! showing (IBA, International Bau-Austellung) also as project of the international (Internationale Gartenschau) 2013. "Our goal is it to do the path to a project of the first presentation for the IBA in the coming summer."
